I've been watching Symphogear with a friend (I've watched both seasons multiple times; this is his first time). There are a few conversation-heavy scenes that, I'm sure, are very critical to Hibiki's and Tsubasa's character development. I know a little Japanese and he knows none, so I've only been able to translate some of the nuance. 1) In episode 4, the conversation between Hibiki & Miku. I don't really get what Miku means when she talks about Hibiki staying herself. (more to follow)
Thanks for this question!! I love talking about stuff like this, sorry I didn’t reply to you sooner. Please send any more that you have!
In regards to episode 4 of season 1, the Hibiki/Miku scene is one of the many important points that creates the arc of Hibiki’s development. Up until this point Hibiki has been suddenly gifted the power of the Symphogear and she leaps at the chance to use it to help others, but it’s only after Tsubasa’s sacrifice while fighting Chris in episode 4 that Hibiki realizes she may have been taking the whole situation pretty lightly. Her resolve at this point lay in the fact she wanted to be useful to others, but this changes when she realizes that she has things she wants to protect and fight for. However Hibiki has an inferiority complex built as a result of her past trauma, she doesn’t believe she is useful on her own and has no special skills. With the power of the Symphogear she can change that, but she thinks this also means she must change herself. She struggles with the concept of abandoning her current self in favor of a more steadfast, dedicated soldier like Tsubasa is. Miku, sensing something is wrong, tries to talk it out. Miku is fully aware of Hibiki’s past and knows that she often is down on herself, so she does the most obvious thing: Let’s Hibiki know that someone cares about her as a person and would be sad if she suddenly changed. Hibiki was willing to change herself because she perceived that as a way to be stronger, but Miku makes her realize that giving up her personality to protect those she cares for is meaningless when it would hurt those same people. Hence she decides to move forward, seeking strength without letting that compromise her individuality.
